Why Is The Name 2,2-Dimethyl-6-ethylheptane Incorrect?

CH3-C(CH3)2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH(CH2-CH3)-CH3

the longest chain is octane…..and the name is 2,2,6-trimethyloctane

see the structure here–
http://www.chemspider.com/Chemical-Structure.45535…

heptane 7 linear carbons in a row…

CCCCCCC
1.2.3.4.5.6.7
then start adding “lettuce out of the carbon chains)

add the ethyl group at position 6
CCCCCC(CH2CH3)-C-

2,2-dimethyl – so it’s 2 methyl groups, each with 2 carbons
CC(CH3)2-CCCC(CH2CH3)-C
While the numbering should be done in such a way that you should choose the longest continuous string end to end as the main string
So your 6-ethyl becomes 3-methyl if you count from that end and the final name is

2,2,6-trimethyloctane
