He didn’t leave… he was fired.
Journey took a break and went off to do some solo projects. Steve Perry has released 2 solo works, Neil Shon has released albums with Bad Enlish as well as other side projects, Steve Smith has released a few albums with Shrapnel artists. Johnathan Cain did Bad English with Neil Shon.
They came back with the “classic” lineup and recorded a new CD. Before he could go on tour, Steve Perry had hip pain and instead of undergoing surgery recommended by his doctor, he opted to try working out with physical therapy.
The rest of the band refused to wait another 6 months to a year and left the CD to die on the vine as surgery would have put Steve on the road in 2-3 months, so they replaced him with Steve Augeri.
In 1986, Steve Perry’s mother fell ill. Production of the Steve Perry-produced Journey Raised on Radio album was a stop-and-go as Steve frequently returned to the San Joaquin Valley to visit family. It was a huge cost for Journey to have intermittent recording sessions and a singer who wasn’t with the band most of the time. Eventually, as Steve later said, it “was fried”. Journey disbanded in 1987 after the Raised on Radio tour. Steve disappeared from public view for years afterwards, taking a break from the industry.
Journey reunited in 1996 for Trial by Fire. The album was a success, but short-lived. Prior to the Trial By Fire tour, Perry injured his hip while hiking in the mountains in Hawaii and was unable to perform. He suffered from a degenerative bone disease and would need a hip replacement. Steve was hesitant to have surgery and wanted to postpone the tour.
Given an ultimatum by his impatient bandmates, Perry chose to leave Journey for good.
Shocked and saddened fans mourned Perry’s absence saying “Journey’s voice” is gone.
Steve debated whether to pursue a solo career or return to Journey after the success of Street Talk. His mother said, “Journey,” and Steve obeyed. He left his second solo album Against The Wall unfinished and instead sang on Journey’s Raised on Radio album. Perry would eventually continue his solo project after the Raised On Radio tour, but it was never completed.
Unfortunately, during this time, Steve’s mother fell ill. Production of Raised on Radio, which he produced, was intermittent, as Steve often returned to the San Joaquin Valley to visit family.
