Wood, peat, braided leaves, bundles of rushes, terracotta, flint, granite, pumice stone, caves, etc., etc. Different cultures used everything they could.

answer 3

It really depends on where you ask. The Neolithic peoples of the Levant, Anatolia, Syria, northern Mesopotamia and Central Asia were great builders, using mud bricks to build houses and villages. In Çatalhöyük, houses were plastered and painted with elaborate scenes of humans and animals.

In Europe, the Neolithic timber-framed longhouse with a pitched roof, thatched roof and cob walls could be quite large, presumably housing an entire extended family. Villages may include only some of these houses.

In Romania, Moldavia and Ukraine, Neolithic settlements included wattle and daub structures with thatched roofs and log floors covered with clay. It was also during this time that the Burdei underground house building style developed, which was still used by Romanians and Ukrainians until the 20th century. There are
several sites in Eastern Europe dating from 15,000 to 44,000 years ago suggest that humans (probably Homo sapiens) built dwellings using mammoth bones (the age of some of the earlier structures suggests that Neanderthals started the practice).
