What does “Check your signs mean” on Mastering Chemistry?

I worked on my chemistry all weekend. It’s for this Sunday at 11pm and I’m having trouble with this issue. It has several parts, A, B, C, D… The equation that gives me in A is: C3H8(g)+5O2(g)⟶Δ3CO2(g)+4H2O(g)+530kcal. It therefore asks me in part to determine ΔH for the reaction of part A. Give your answer with the corresponding sign. I put 530 and an error popped up saying “check your signals”. I tried adding ΔH and Δ before and after 530, rewrote 530 with a right pointing arrow and nothing worked. What sign should I have with my answer? Where is it going? Whenever I use the keyboard to add a letter, it says the answer doesn’t depend on that letter, except when I put a lowercase g, then it just says it’s wrong. Please help me! I’m almost done with my homework and my brain is fried. I want a break.

In this case, “Check your signs” means that your answer has the wrong sign.

The equation given in part A shows that heat is a reaction product. And as you answered correctly, that makes it an exothermic reaction. By convention, the ΔH for all exothermic processes is negative. The correct answer for part B is therefore “-530 kcal”. (You have been notified of the signal.)
