It’s so 80s. The gangs learned a long time ago that that’s not an efficient way to do things.
I lived in Los Angeles for 10 years in the 2000s and never worried about the colors I wore.

oh RELAX!!…this is a HUGE metro area with over 13 million people…of course like all metro areas you will have criminal/gang activity but that doesn’t mean the whole landscape is a shooting range… just certain parts of certain cities actually have bad crime rates. in the Los Angeles area, South Los Angeles and parts of East Los Angeles are the deadliest areas… Northwest/West Los Angeles and most of the surrounding suburbs are fine ; actually pretty good..there are A LOT of cool places to live here..just stay outside of south and east LA at night and you should be fine.

Hush. About 30 years ago they were shooting other gang members based on the colors they were wearing. But those days are long gone.

I’m from PA and lived in CA for many years. The purple/blue color element is purely in gang aspects, and it is for gang people. do not submit. If you have questions about your family’s community, ask your loved ones first. I’m wearing a gray sweatshirt in case you think about it, that might want to be a subject, but ultimately I doubt it.

You worry too much! Just stay out of gang-infested areas, which isn’t hard to do. I am sure your hotel is located in a safe area.
You may hear a lot about gangs in Los Angeles, but most people here are law-abiding citizens who dress in colorful clothes year-round.
