To conjugate regular -ar verbs in the past tense, simply remove the ending (-ar) and add one of the following:

He is
to taste
O
love
asteis
Aaron
To conjugate the regular verbs -er and -ir in the past tense, simply remove the ending (-er or -ir) and add one of the following:

I
this
you
imo
isteis
the iron

Verbs ending in -zar, -car or -gar cannot normally be conjugated in the past tense “yo” without having to change their spelling to preserve the pronunciation.

For example, think of the verb pescar (to fish). Try to conjugate it normally in the form “yo”: pesc + -é = pescé. The letter ‘c’ is a soft sound in Spanish, so the word would sound weighed. In order to preserve the hard ‘k’ sound of “fish”, Spanish changes the ‘c’ to ‘qu’, turning the ‘yo’ form into a pesqué.

The following table gives examples of some irregular verbs that change “yo” form to preserve correct pronunciation. Note that the other conjugations remain regular.

BEGINNING
(to start) FISH
(fish) PAY
(Pay)
yo start fishing pay
you started fishing you paid
Ud., él, ella comenzó pescó pagó
we start fishing we pay
you ate you fished you paid
Uds., ellos, ellas camenzaron pescaron pagaon

They just want you to take the “traigo” and change it into a “costume”. and the “trae” and change it to “trajo”. They want you to find the conjugated verb and change it to past tense.
