Every time she barked, I shook the can and said it softly in a stern voice. The sound stopped her barking, so she listened to my command. It took about a week and she quit. However, you should not let the dog bark. If you do that, they’ll do it when they shouldn’t, which is when you’re not home. As for when you’re away from home, I think the only non-electric, non-vaping thing I can think of is a limp mussel. They can drink from the soft mussel and it doesn’t hurt them, they just can’t bark or bite. If I understand correctly, it is very difficult to get a dog to stop barking at an advanced age. You are trying to stop something that is ingrained in them from doing. Now a few questions for you, are the dogs cage trained? If they are caged, try placing a light blanket over the crate to limit stimuli around them. Do they have access to windows? What is the reason they bark? Maybe it’s something in the environment that makes them bark. Maybe people talking, passers-by, animals outside. If so, perhaps try limiting access to these stimuli. Perhaps place them in an isolated area of the house to limit stimuli. Make sure they can no longer see through the window. If it’s separation anxiety, get an old shirt to sleep in one night, then put it in the dog’s crate with him. It will smell like you and help the dog feel more comfortable. I did when I went to the hospital to give birth. It helped Kaylea a lot. These are all the things my grandfather suggested for my dog. I’ve tried them all except box training because I don’t really believe in them. Reducing stimuli reduced his barking significantly. The only thing that stopped was the “noise can” I called
