What is the origin and meaning of the phrase you can’t? To my ear it has an archaic tone, but searches yield entries in the Urban Dictionary, as well as a quote from Sense and Sensibility. Its distorted syntax, its potential and its indirect ambiguity intrigue me. Part of my linguistic heritage is American Irish, so I also wonder if that suggests its origin.
