“It’s our God-forsaken right to be loved”….?

What do you think of these lyrics by Jason Mraz?

(I answered this a short time ago…so it includes more renditions, like the “our name is our virtue” part of the song. Anyway, I hope it will help you understand the song better.)

“It’s our God-forgotten right to be loved.”
He sings for a person who refuses or finds it difficult to love or receive love (“Well, open your mind and see like me. Open your plans and you are free. Look into your heart and you will find the love, love love love…”) and therefore prevents him from completely abandoning himself, so he keeps saying to him: “I am yours.” This person he’s singing to probably doesn’t appreciate the right to be loved, so he thinks she sees it as a right forgotten by God.

“Our name is our virtue.”
It implies that vanity is not necessary. We constantly try to impress others by being beautiful and this physical appearance is overrated.

(“I spent a lot of time checking my tongue in the mirror
and lean back just to try to see more clearly
my breath fogged the glass
So I drew a new face and laughed
I guess what I’m saying is there’s no better reason
get rid of vanity and follow the seasons
that’s what we intend to do
our name is our virtue”)

I think he means that our virtues are bestowed upon us when we are born and appointed. This is our time of pure innocence. It was a time when we did not know vanity and where we did not judge. And when we act out of virtue, we are able to love and be loved.

The whole song is about him trying to make a girl realize she’s lovable. He loves her, but she doesn’t allow him to share those feelings for her. So he just decides to let her know without hesitation that he gives himself to her. She probably has a lot of inhibitions or lacks confidence in her looks and he’s trying to tell her that vanity isn’t important…it’s who we are that’s important.

It’s just my interpretation of the lines and the music. There are several meanings to this, I’m sure. Anyway, the music is positive and I love it.

From Jason Mraz himself: “I would also like to mention a change in the lyrics. Shortly after recording I’m Yours, I changed “God gave up the right to be loved” to “God wanted the right to be loved”. I am not religious and only nature is my guru, but I felt that the Universal Life Force that drives us, which many understand as their God, would not abandon us to give us the right to be loved. Instead, I feel love is what nature intended. At the time the lyrics were conceived, I didn’t fully understand them. The song was written in a rapid stream of consciousness, after all. I was simply transforming a sentence. And soon after, I turned it into something else. I mention this change because I would love to hear the public sing along to the new lyrics, as well as any new covers that may appear in the years to come.

What do you think of these lyrics by Jason Mraz?

It’s from his song “I’m Yours”. And I love the song, but this line confuses me a little because I don’t know how to understand it.

Can anyone share how they see this? Or the sense of music and all that? Thanks. ^_^

Midnightblue, you are absolutely right. When Mraz wrote and sang “I’m Yours”, he didn’t understand the meaning of “abandoned”. As originally written, the lyrics would mean that people have been given the right to love because God has abandoned them.
Mraz himself admitted the error. He changed the lyrics to “It’s our God’s right to be loved…” He posted this information on his own website, jasonmraz.com.

forgotten by god

I see this as meaning that we feel like our right to be loved is overlooked and forgotten. We talk about the “right to pursue happiness” and all sorts of other rights, but what about the right to be loved? He seems to be forgotten, abandoned, even by God. I don’t know, just what it looks like to me…

I think so expensive. So I won’t hesitate any longer, I can’t wait any longer I’m sure There’s no need to complicate, our time is short It’s our destiny I’m yours….

I think it refers to how love can take a person through emotional pain.

HE CLEARLY MEANS TO SAY “GOD’S RIGHT TO BE LOVES”, BUT FOR SOME REASON NO ONE CAN KNOW. NOR HIM.
