Stalin purged most people, including experts in industry, economics, engineering, and many of his most talented writers and thinkers. Among the victims were most of the country’s military leaders and half of its military officers. Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin was a Georgian revolutionary and Soviet politician who led the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s until 1953 as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1922-1953) and Prime Minister (1941 -1953).
Joseph Stalin served as General Secretary of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1953. During the 1930s, he managed to consolidate enough power to become the country’s dictator. Stalin carried out his “five-year plan”, where the country underwent agricultural collectivization. This plan involved the taking over and administration of all agricultural land by the government. This would eventually lead to the general mismanagement of agricultural production that culminated in the Great Famine of 1932. The government would begin to face opposition to this event, but Stalin would proceed with the “Great Purge” where he would stop more of one million politically opposed citizens. It is believed that 700,000 of those arrested were executed.
