There are so many things a dog (or human) can be allergic to, whether it’s food or environmental allergies. Sometimes, after years and years, we discover, unfortunately for the dog, that it is only a few years before we find out what the dog reacts to. If you suspect an autoimmune reaction is responsible for your dog’s reactions, you have plenty of reading to catch up on and plenty of articles to read. It’s like going by ear with a pen and paper. I know people with dogs who are allergic to weird things like carpeting, carpet underlay, glue for linoleum on the kitchen floor, in a mobile home some friends have discovered that the cardboard used for the floor had formaldehyde in their makeup, the dog was allergic to it, had no hair and had persistent eye problems to the point that the corneas had a cloudy coating. They ended up selling their house and moving to an older house that didn’t have any modern glues or sealants. You might want to read about dog allergies, symptoms, etc. any grain allergies. Some theories say that raw food diets will help pets with allergies and immunosuppressive issues. I don’t know if there is any medical evidence or proof that raw diets are better, but a lot of people have converted to them. Try to think back to when the dog’s symptoms started, go back 6 months before that – there’s your approximate onset time to check. The questions would be: new furniture, carpeting, bedding for people and dogs? Even if you’ve gone from a wooden or plastic dog bed frame to metal, the upholstery could be something your dog reacts to, plastic flooring, etc. Dog food – is it the exact same brand? No change in flavor, no novelties or improvements? Aren’t there new flavor charmers for food? If not, call the manufacturer and ask directly if they have made any changes to their formula. Let them know that you are calling to find out if it is possible to have a food allergy to what the dog has been eating for years, you will be surprised. I called the place that makes the brand of food for my dogs and found out they had changed the formula from corn kernels/beet pulp to oats/barley and something else. When I asked why they didn’t advertise the change, I was told calorie intake remained the same, fiber remained the same, ingredients were on the bag, protein, etc. were the same, they found that barley and oats were more effective and had the same coat as. Blah, blah, blah… Less than 10% change didn’t need to let everyone know, because essentially the food value was considered the same. BLA bla. Blah….. After 30 years of using the product, and after the buzz of an answer what are you going to do about it. I changed products. It’s simple. After spending several nights with my dogs trying to figure out what they did, we came back with chicken rice for 2 weeks – found out it was the food. Something so simple. Your dog could have a simple food allergy, eat eggs instead of other proteins or swap rice for beets, peas or peanuts, you never know what a dog might react to. The idea for the next area seems silly, do you have different floor products, laundry detergent, new houseplants, another pet? One thing that crossed our minds once was that the neighbors were avid horses, their garage was like a barn inside with all the bales of hay, straw, saddles, harnesses – the only thing that missing was the horse. Our bulldog mix turned out to be a pathetic pink-scaled creature that was constantly sniffling and had snot coming out of its nose. We mentioned that our neighbors had horses and the vet ran some tests on her and found it was lemongrass and something else she was reacting to. Sophie’s condition took about a month to improve, but he noticed a big difference within a week. After 6 months you couldn’t recognize the dog, she became a pet for her children and had a pink collar and bows. Good luck with your hunt, I wish I could say it was just your height accuracy, something simple like that. Your dog was fine for a while. It could be a biological problem, as the vet thinks, it could be an autoimmune disease that has gone biological, or a combination of the two. Doing some detective work and ruling out for sure what it isn’t is the only way to know for sure. I was lucky that my brother and I were constantly switching dogs, working and training each other’s dogs – not everyone gets that opportunity, it was pure luck on my part.
