Found My Cat Eating Raw Chicken That I Was Defrosting On The Counter. Will He Get Sick?

We were only out for an hour and I left the chicken on the counter in its original wrapper in a ziplock wrapper to defrost in a plastic bowl. He jumped up on the counter (what’s up) and bit into the chicken. There were styrofoam and plastic bits everywhere and not to mention chicken juice. The chicken was still partially frozen so I can’t tell what he actually ate, but he certainly did a great job of reaching the chicken. I gave him food and water right after and he ate but he acted like I made him hungry! What the hell? Why did my cat do this, he has never done this and has been with us for 6 years.

First of all, you shouldn’t thaw chicken on a kitchen counter – you’ll end up getting sick. Allow to thaw in the refrigerator or microwave.
Second, no, your cat will be fine. Animals eat raw meat in the wild, and cats can handle it too. As to why he was so hungry for meat – did he ever eat canned food? I suppose not. How about giving him quality canned food once in a while instead of mostly corn-based dry food? Cats are carnivores and should be fed a quality meat-based diet.

Can cats eat raw chicken?

lol No, the chicken won’t hurt you. It’s GOOD for him. You should think about giving him chicken necks. I’m sure he would be very happy.
Yes, many people feed their carnivorous pets raw foods that they would naturally eat. I don’t see how you can blame your cat for doing what it would naturally do. mr Sorry. I still laugh about it. The kitten wants it, the kitten takes it. lol
I started feeding my dogs the BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods) diet almost a year ago and it has been wonderful. My dogs now eat hungrily (well, one of them always ate – like a pig!) so my lean is now great and my chubby isn’t so fat anymore. I won’t bore you, it’s just good for my dogs. Raw meats are good.
The chicken your cat ate was still cold and not rotting or anything. He also won’t catch salmonella. It seems people are reporting problems when fed raw and kibble together, as the meat stays in the belly for a while with the less digestible kibble. If your cat has a stomach ache from this, he will be fine within 24 hours.
The only thing I could worry about is the styrofoam, but I doubt he was hungry for it and probably didn’t ingest a lot of it or anything.

Cats are “obligate carnivores”, meaning they are meat eaters. They don’t need corn, oats, wheat, rice, etc. All they really need is meat.
So it’s no surprise that your cat did what came naturally to him: he ate the chicken neck! Your teeth probably had a good cleaning at the same time.
I feed raw chicken necks 5 times a week for oral health. However, if you are going to feed raw chicken necks, stay with your cat in case the chicken’s neck gets stuck and he needs help. Any bones you feed a cat or dog should be raw, yes it is fine to feed raw bones, and bone eating sessions should always be supervised…

Cats know what is the best food for them. Raw meat is their natural diet, of course. Cats have a very short digestive system, which avoids problems with food contamination. Eating chicken is highly unlikely to make your cat sick, although hopefully he didn’t swallow the styrofoam! It may be time to consider a raw diet for your cat. He looks excited!

Your cat will not get sick. Cats have a better ability to handle bacteria than we do. In fact, raw food is healthy food for a cat if prepared correctly; y/ If you don’t want to go that route, you can always snack on raw chicken. If you are interested

My ex-husband was tight and really didn’t like my cat. Well, one day she jumped on the counter, opened the tenderloin and chewed a little and drugged it behind the dusty stove.
Knowing that he would be very upset and that I didn’t want to hear it, I washed this sucker, cooked and he ate. I never knew. The cat lived to be 18 years old. We only lasted 7 years. LOL
Your cat did it because it was there. He must be fine.

Please don’t panic! The cat will be fine! Once my beautiful Siamese cat came into my living room with a live blue bird in its mouth and right in front of my eyes it finished killing it and started eating! I freaked out and yelled at him, “Bad Cat!” And somehow I took a newspaper and pulled the dead bird out of its mouth and threw it in a trash can outside. I called my vet and he told me animals can digest things we humans can’t! Wow!

Hunted, caught and eaten!!! He probably felt quite pleased with himself too. He won’t get sick, so don’t worry about unfreezing things where he might get them next time.
