Watching the movie at a friend’s house but I don’t understand what the Chinese are talking about because there is NO subtitles. Did the proper movie have on-screen captions when they spoke?

All the previous answers have focused on the abundance of dialects.. Well that’s true, but not all.. Even though everyone only speaks Mandarin and the movie is in Mandarin, the subtitles are still needed.. that’s because Chinese is always one syllable, besides every word having 20 or 30 other words with the same sound.. so it’s very easy to wonder what exactly was said.. It’s that’s why when Chinese speak in public, most of the time they have to send the text in advance so that people can read and understand what was said. Chinese is not the best language for read an essay aloud.. due to the abundance of words pronounced the same way.. Chinese people have to write their names or describe how their names would be spelled when introduced to another Chinese.. again because we have so many words pronounced the same way.. for example.. Chen is a very popular Chinese surname.. if you think Mr. Chen, you know, is Mr.陳, you might be in for a big surprise. Of course, 陳 is much more numerous than other Chen, like 程，成。 That’s why they have to write it down to make sure they get the right names when introducing each other..

A. I hate those answers. The answer has to be yes or no, by people who have seen it in theaters to answer the question: “Do you have subtitles when you watch at home or a downloaded version?” Yes or no. And B. I don’t think it’s preachy to expect someone to know the difference between calling people Japanese and Chinese.

I think they had subtitles when speaking Japanese, but as others have said, maybe we shouldn’t know what they are talking about.
Then again, I’m just like 30min. in the movie? They seem to have no subtitles for any of the scenes.

IN ANY EVENT. Yes, there must be subtitles for scenes with Japanese dialogue.
If they’re not there, someone played and hung up or more likely, I bet it’s not a proper trade copy, in which case they probably wouldn’t have them.

Go to a site like subscene.com, download and extract the .srt file to the same folder where you have a copy of the movie. Using VLC media player, do the following:
– click on the media tab
– open the file and double click on the movie to play
– right click on the screen
– select video
– select subtitle track
– open the file and select the .srt file you downloaded
wow the subtitles!
