My hair has always been very dark. I recently bleached my hair and now it’s almost white. Did my dog find it? If so, does she assume that I am a distinct individual or does she know that I am myself anyway?

I’m sure she tilted her head a bit, wondering what’s going on? And, she probably lost the smell of her hair before her hair color changed (known) too. Current scientific analysis from Emory College’s Psychology Division has revealed that dogs are able to recognize both human and canine faces. It’s quite exceptional, so despite the fact that his hair color has changed, the relaxation allows him to become aware of his face, his voice and his smell.

I agree with the general consensus that dogs would discover a distinct scent rather than noticing a change in hair color.
However, we needed a really tangled rescue sheepdog which our dog knew very well after over 2 weeks of staying with us and once we introduced the beautiful hairless canine again, our canine (and cat ) didn’t seem to recognize her at all, any aspect (at first).
In fact, she clearly smelled totally different (having been washed/dressed/shaved), however, the surprise response was from afar (front door to approach kitchen). It was hilarious and I wish I had thought to put it down. They looked completely shocked. I therefore assume that it is not excluded that your dog does not notice a change in his hair color. The residual smell of bleach and peroxide toner would probably be famous (even if you can’t perfume it, it will).

Dogs know you mainly by your smell, they identify with the same. She also knows you by your voice, but your scent is a crucial factor for the dog. She probably thinks your hair has changed and just thought “something” popped into your head. She’s not so wrong.

It’s possible, some animals find out if you change hair. Your dog probably knows it’s still you, he just needs to learn how to adapt to change.
My cats gave me an unusual look after I bleached my hair a few years ago, but they know it’s still me.
