Can I Get A Spare Honda Key Made At Home Depot Or Do I Have To Go To The Dealership?

I have an 04 Honda Odyssey that needs a spare key. Where can I choose the cheapest option?

You MUST get the key from the dealer. The key has an engine immobilizer which if not programmed the key will not start the car. The way to check if you have a chip in your key, turn the key (the one you have now), to acc and you will see a small green key on the dash. This shows the communication between the key and the immobilizer. It will also tell you if the car has the immobilizer system on the window sticker. You probably have a copy in your glove box.

Honda depot

You can cut the key at Home Depot, but you’ll have to program it yourself.
NOTE: Key blanks are expensive. Mine cost around $25 each.
Look in the owner’s manual how to do this.
I have a Ford truck and all I had to do to program the key was:
Put the original key in the ignition and turn it on, but don’t start the engine.
Turn off the key.
Insert the new key and turn it on within 5 seconds of the original key.
turn off the key
Plug in the new key and start the engine.
Normally, key programming is as simple as that. The Ford dealer wanted about $50 for a new “programmed key”
I hope this helps you. Try!!

Very few Hyundai vehicles in the US market have chips, and of those, only the latest models. Elantra is not chipped. That being said, your best bet would be a locksmith as there are 17 possible blanks for the vehicle depending on the model…and the last 5 are not available at retail stores like Home Depot, Ace, etc.

You have to go to the Honda dealership. If Home Depot can do it, I haven’t had to pay so much for the latest model Honda keys.

If the key has a computer chip (anti-theft resistor) then you must go to Honda. Otherwise, Home Depot can make a Honda key that looks and works perfectly.

It is not a normal key because it has a rib in the middle which is not cut. The chip is in the remote’s head, which can be opened and the chip and switches moved to a new head, but you have to cut the key on a machine that preserves the midrib, likely a feature that makes it more difficult to copy of the key out from the dealer. I have a body on eBay, but where can I cut it?

The chip from the old keyhole is quite easy to remove and place in the new keyhole. No programming required. You will still need to program the keyless entry part, but it’s easy and of course, have it cut by a local locksmith. Don’t let Honda do anything to your car. They are crooks. They wanted $85 plus labor to replace the cabin air filter. I bought one for $7 and made it myself!

Ace Hardware could cut one for $89.95 with programming, $25 for the door key only which won’t work in the ignition. I think I’ll take both so I can hide a good one in the car and use the door key in my wallet in case I lose my keys!
