Simple. Since people need to drink to survive, we make the association that if a person is alive today, they are doing what is necessary to stay alive…that being the obvious; breathe, eat, sleep, drink. So if someone asks you “Do you drink?” It’s quite obvious that the question isn’t completely literal, as you can imagine they’ve already made the association that you’re drinking easily and are instead using straightforward terminology.
