Take a closer look, what do you see? A genius, offering temptation, the devil too. A larva, a hypodermic needle, a skull and a skeleton. What the artwork shows metaphorically, to me, is that although Cali is a fun and relaxed place, all is not as it seems. Even the real sun seems depressed by his expression. Scratch the surface, and all is not well.
Of course, if you avoid temptations, you may only see one sun.

I wholeheartedly agree with this considered view, and have a few things to add that I think are part of your theory, but not directly expressed.
There’s definitely a drug theme to the image, as the head is made from a mushroom. Moreover, the skeleton of a fish is an omen in itself; Brad’s tattoo on his left forearm also had a black fish skeleton, where he would inject his heroin. Later, Opie (the same artist) added waves reminiscent of Cali, but filled those waves with barrels of toxic waste, streaks and needles… not all serene.

sorry i can’t help you find a sublime tattoo idea…but i have a question for you: WHY IN GOD’S NAME WOULD YOU GET A TATTOO AS USEFUL AS THIS??? do you realize that in a few years you will find a new band that you like and that sublime will be the story? Tattoos should be something important in your life that you won’t regret getting. Tattoo removal is expensive and painful. Do you really want to have this tattoo for the rest of your life? Think about it.

The symbol comes from a Sublime CD cover, “40 oz. to Freedom” released in 1992. The band was very drugged and drank tequila and I think the mouth is a tequila worm. Opie Ortiz is the tattoo artist who created the design for Sublime Sun. I think, like all works of art, it’s up to the viewer to decide what it means, even if for me it’s influenced by hard drugs.
