The prints result from the engraving process. Printmaking is the process of making artwork by printing, usually on paper. Except in the case of monotyping, the process is capable of producing multiples of the same part, this is called stamping. Each piece is not a copy but an original as it is not a reproduction of another work of art and is technically known as a print. Painting or drawing, on the other hand, creates an original and unique work of art. Prints are created from a single original surface, technically known as a matrix. Common types of dies include: metal plates, usually copper or zinc for etching or etching; stone, used for lithography; woodblocks for woodcuts, linoleum for linocuts and fabric sheets for screen printing. But there are many other types, discussed below. Works printed from a single plate create an edition, in modern times usually each signed and numbered to form a limited edition. Prints can also be published as books, such as artist’s books. A single fingerprint can be the product of one or more techniques.
