for ethanol –
The unique solubility of ethanol is mainly due to its
versatile nature as it has both a polar end and a non-polar end. hexane,
which has no hydrogen group and is nonpolar, is not
soluble or miscible with water, which is the most polar
substance. But since ethanol has a non-polar hydrocarbon chain and
a polar OH group, is soluble and miscible with water and
also miscible with hexane.
methanol and propanol are miscible… like the carbon chain
increases the hydrophobic part also increases and the solubility in
the water decreases. then 1-pentanol will be less soluble in water.
solubility in hexane-
As the number of carbons increases, the solubility of alcohol in
hexane increases for the same reason.
