I’m from the western United States and I say awful. my mom is from the east coast and she says horrible. Is it just her or do other people talk like that?
answer 2
Sounds like an East Coast thing to say “awful”. I have lives in Texas, Illinois, and California, but didn’t notice the rampant “horrors” and “carridders” until I moved to Virginia. That’s when I started noticing this in Virgins and other eastern highlands (New Yorkers, Marylanders, Southeast, etc.). makes me crazy; why on earth would “ou” produce an “air” sound? The Wonder Years narrator does, as do many East Coast radio personalities such as Mark Levin.
answer 3
I have never heard anyone say horrible! (I’m English) but in New Zealand they do weird things with their vowels so you can say there
Answer 6
i say awful, maybe your mum watches too many harry potter/british movies

I agree with Eyewey.
I say harible (pronounced like the “a” in the car)
I don’t know many East Coast natives who say this like the vowel sound in “treasure”.
